Malala Yousafzai Youngest Nominee for Nobel Peace Prize

Malala Yousafzai( born 12 July 1997) is youngest nominee for the Nobel Peace Prize in history. She is known for her education and women's rights activism in the Swat Valley, where the Taliban had at times banned girls from attending school. On 9 October 2012, Yousafzai was shot in the head and neck in an assassination attempt by Taliban gunmen while returning home on a school bus. In the days immediately following the attack, she remained unconscious and in critical condition,[18] but later her condition improved enough for her to be sent to a hospital in the United Kingdom for intensive rehabilitation. On 12 October, a group of 50 Islamic clerics in Pakistan issued a fatwā against those who tried to kill her,[19] but the Taliban reiterated its intent to kill Yousafzai and her father, Ziauddin.
Former British Prime Minister and current U.N. Special Envoy for Global Education Gordon Brown launched a United Nations petition in Yousafzai's name, using the slogan "I am Malala" and demanding that all children worldwide be in school by the end of 2015. Brown said he would hand the petition to Pakistan's President Asif Ali Zardari in November. U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon has announced that 10 November will be celebrated as Malala Day.
Holi hai! Nitish Kumar beats Narendra Modi in 'pichkari' battle
It is a contest between Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and his Gujarat counterpart Narendra Modi -- and the former is ahead. "Pichkaris (colour sprinklers)" with pictures of the two leaders are doing brisk business in the markets here ahead of Holi. Pichkaris bearing the photos of the two are more popular than those with Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief and former chief minister Lalu Prasad.

"Nitish Kumar is more popular than Narendra Modi. It was again reflected in the pichkaris market," said party leader Sanjay Singh.

"Nitish Kumar is more popular than Narendra Modi. It was again reflected in the pichkaris market," said party leader Sanjay Singh.
UPA looks to Nitish Kumar as insurance against unpredictable allies
As it considers Bihar's demand for concessions on grounds of backwardness, the Manmohan Singh government is eyeing the Janata Dal (U)'s 20 MPs as a handy cushion against temperamental allies like Samajwadi Party.
Its numerical vulnerability enhanced by the loss of 19 MPs after DMK and its ally VCK withdrew support, the government hopes accommodating Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar's key political demand will help it win a new friend.
Reacting to reports of the Centre rethinking criteria for backwardness - a move that benefits Bihar and some other states - Kumar on Tuesday stuck to his demand for "special status" on the basis of the state being "economically backward".
But he seemed upbeat over the UPA government's receptive mood, saying, "The Centre will be compelled to consider our demand in the end." He added, "...what is important is that the Centre should fulfill its promises. Bihar and other backward states should get their due."
The Centre is not yet ready to concede special status categorization, but the attention Kumar recently received from PM Manmohan Singh and finance minister P Chidambaram seems to be translating into tangible benefits.
Janata Dal (U) sources said if Bihar receives benefits such as reduction of Rs 6,000-7,000 crore the state forks out annually by way of its share of central schemes and other payments, the party can offer issue-based support.
Despite lack of a formal alliance, uncertainty over JD(U)'s stance can discourage adventurism by others seeking to force an election. Despite his unease with Congress, SP boss Mulayam Singh Yadav may have to bide his time.

BJP downplayed suggestions of proximity between its ally and Congress. "We are also supporting the demand for backward status for Bihar. I don't think Congress is going to derive any political comfort from such a move," BJP spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad said.
But while BJP leaders said previous instances of JD(U)'s cooperation with UPA such as support for Pranab Mukherjee as president were one-off instances, the regional party may not have qualms about bailing out the ruling coalition.
Kumar has made it clear that he will support whoever fulfills "Bihar's legitimate demand" and if UPA obliges him, he can offer his assistance even as he refuses to sign up as even an "outside supporter" like his adversaries Lalu Prasad and Ramvilas Paswan.
JD(U)'s political calculations are not as complicated as they might appear. The party is ready to end its alliance with BJP whenever Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi's projection as PM becomes a flashpoint.
The view in both parties is that differences over Modi are bound to boil over soon and Kumar seems to be increasingly ready for that moment. The JD(U) leader believes he has forged a formidable political coalition in Bihar that will be unstoppable in a three-way contest between him, BJP and a Congress-RJD-LJP bloc.
The chief minister's confidence seems to lie in the success of his strategy to woo the most backward castes and the mahadalits. Support of non-Yadav OBC castes along with a section of the Muslim vote puts him ahead of all rivals.
Kumar hopes to be in a near unassailable position without upper caste support but party leaders feel he is hardly a "hate figure" for this voluble section of voters as Lalu was. He might, they say, get a slice of upper caste votes too for his record in improving law and order and postings of upper castes in key district and state posts.
Keeping in mind that the upper castes and Muslims are more or less accounted for, Kumar can hope to contest on his own in the next national election and wait to see who he could ally with at the Centre thereafter.

Strong quake kills one, injures 19 in Taiwan
TAIPEI: A strong earthquake killed one person and injured 19 others in Taiwan on Wednesday as violent shock waves damaged buildings and triggered a blaze, emergency officials said.
The US Geological Survey measured the quake at magnitude 6.0 and said it struck at 10:03 am (0203 GMT), 48 kilometres (30 miles) east of Nantou county in central Taiwan at a depth of 20.7 kilometres.
Taiwan's central weather bureau put the magnitude at 6.1, saying it was the largest quake this year and was felt across the island. Five aftershocks measured from 3.7-4.3 in magnitude occurred in two hours after the main tremor, it said.
The national fire agency said a 72-year-old woman at a temple in Nantou was struck by a wall that crumbled during the quake and died on the spot.
Nineteen others were slightly injured in the same county and the nearby Changhua and Taichung counties.
The quake also triggered a fire in a house in Nantou that injured one person and had since been extinguished, it said.
The agency received five reports of people trapped in lifts during the quake but they had all found their way to safety.
Cable news channel SET TV showed footage of one woman in Nantou being carried to an ambulance after she was hit in the head by fragments of a ceiling that came loose during the quake.

China’s First Lady Sparks Fashion Frenzy
As President Xi Jinping and his wife set off on their first state visit, China’s online fashion world began to scrutinize the wardrobe of First Lady Peng Liyuan, a 50-year-old singer. The Beijing News ran a full page on Peng’s appointments in Moscow accompanied by a photograph of her dressed in a tunic and skirt, writes the Telegraph. Meanwhile, Peng’s attire went viral on the Internet as copies of the simple black coat she wore on the trip began to appear on the Web selling for $80. Chinese websites were quick to crack down on the First Lady’s popularity and reportedly blocked key words connected to Peng.

China’s First Ladies have always had a tradition of keeping a low profile. Liu Yongqing, who was married to former President Hu Jintao, rarely appeared in public while her predecessor, Wang Yeping, also chose to step outside the spotlight. The Chinese public is now looking forward to seeing a lot more of the soprano who has performed in the Lincoln Center in New York City and the Vienna State Opera. “Because of her performer’s background and presence, I think she will definitely add points for her husband,” Tian Yimiao, an associate professor at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, told the New York Times. “It could make her into a diplomatic idol.”
As well as being compared to the Duchess of Cambridge, Peng has been likened by some to Michelle Obama — “modern, outgoing, intrigued by fashion,” according to the New York Times. There are hopes that Peng, who is a U.N. ambassador for health, may give a speech on AIDS during her trip to South Africa. Peng could be the soft-power presence China is trying to establish on the world stage.
